Strengthening Communities Through Empowerment Learning

Educational Support for Personal Growth

Who Are We?

The Preston Area Learning Skills Society is a non-profit community based organization. It was established in 1987 as a community school program and has since evolved to become a recognized adult education service provider in the Preston Area. PALS serves the communities of Lake Loon / Cherry Brook, North Preston and East Preston. PALS is governed by a board of directors made up of individuals from the communities it serves. PALS prides itself with delivering quality education tailored to the needs of the learner.

Our Mission, Vision, Objectives

The Preston Area Learning Skills Society is committed to the academic well being of the Preston Area. We are partners in Preston Area community development and our contribution is in the field of adult education and family learning. We partner with government agencies, industry and the community in the delivery of our programs and initiatives. The Preston Area Learning Skills Society envisions a community with all members having a high school education or higher. We view ourselves as proactive practitioners in the realization of this vision. Our main objective is to provide Foundation Education (junior high equivalency). This includes support in seeking higher levels of education and training. Our other objectives include providing learning programs for young families and seniors.

What Do We Offer?

We offer an Adult Learning Program based on the Nova Scotia School for Adult Learning curriculum and focuses on literacy, and numeracy. Our Adult Learning Program has a daytime class, an evening class and occasional seminars. This program is for individuals seeking Foundation Education for the purpose of enrolling into Advanced Education with a goal of obtaining a Nova Scotia High School Diploma for Adults. This program is also for individuals seeking Advanced Education as a prerequisite to employment related education or training, and for individuals seeking this level of education to prepare for the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) test. Our program is suitable as well for learners whose goal is to improve their quality of life and/or community leadership competencies. We can arrange tutoring for adult learners. We partner with regional learning initiatives and other service providers to deliver our services. We host learning events, support the publication of learners’ literary work and celebrate learner achievement.
